Bay Area Meat Price Report

So far in 2022, our Northern California members have collectively shared restaurant supply price information on over 4,000 products. These prices are taken directly from real invoices, but do not include any manufacturer rebates the member may have earned. Our Q1 Northern California data covers total purchases representing almost $400,000 in total supply spend with over $100,000 spent specifically on meats (Beef, Poultry, and Pork).

Separate from our invoice price database, we collect information on restaurant supply prices from a variety of online sellers.

Chicken Prices

We have collected chicken prices on a variety of cuts including chicken breast, chicken thighs, chicken wings, and whole chickens. The large price variances seen for chicken breast can largely explained by differences in quality and attributes with the most expensive "per lbs" prices being applied to Organic, Free Range, and Hormone Free products. The highest price chicken thigh products feature similar nutritional or environmental benefit claims.

Pork Prices

The pork prices extend to our restaurant members also show wide price ranges (the highest prices we've seen are as much as 80% more than the lowest prices within the same segment). Drivers of price differences include quality and a general increase in prices across all products from the beginning to the end of the quarter. However, quality and prices increases over time do not explain all the differences we've seen in prices, and some members are definitely getting a better deal than others.

Beef Prices

Overall the beef prices extended to our restaurant members were more competitive than the chicken and pork prices across the board, with much small ranges between the highest and lowest price items in each segment. In some instances we had a limited number of data points. Instead of showing a price range for those products, we instead displayed the average price we saw for those beef cuts.
